Play dates

Since meeting Lula, the French Bulldog,  the boys have had several more play dates. Della, the yellow lab — one of Grandpa Sam’s best friends — has been over several times.  She’s older and not as inclined to play, but her calm energy and patience with the pups is wonderful.  Blu, the puppy Great Dane, stopped by a couple weekends ago, but even as a pup, she was very great in stature… more like a small pony than a dog.  The pups were very shy around her.  (DezandNick felt badly because Blu was so interested in playing with the boys.  We’ll try again when the Uzi & Sassa have grown a little.)   And most recently, Bailey, the cock-a-poo who lives next door, came over for a visit.

Bailey was clearly happy to put a “bark” with a face; he’s been hearing the pups on the other side of the hedgerow for several weeks now.  The pups took to him right away.

Remember When… Ouzo

Dez and Nick met the pups, their mum (Pippa) & their sister (Amy) when the pups were about 5 weeks old.  Here’s Nick with Ouzo.  Fluffy even then, but still so small!

And here’s Uzi more recently, at 11 weeks old.  Of course, he’s more of a wiggle worm now — DezandNick couldn’t get him to set still for his portrait.

Remember When… Sassafras

DezandNick met the pups, their mum (Pippa) & their sister (Amy) when the pups were about 5 weeks old.  Here’s Dez with Sassafras and Amy. Look at how tiny he was!

And here’s what he looks like now (well, last week):

Pups at play

DezandNick read puppy rearing books that said, humans should not play tug of war with their pups.  Apparently, if we lose/allow the dogs to win, then it undermines our leadership position in the pups’ eyes. (Who knew?)  Luckily, they have each other, so tug of war occurs daily.  Ouzo has the weight advantage, but Sassa works the angles to his own advantage.  All’s fair in love and [tug of] war.

Have pups, will travel

Ouzo & Sassafras

DezandNick & the pups had a lovely evening at our friend Tom’s house the other day.  DezandNick set up the puppy play pen in Tom’s yard and the pups seemed perfectly content. Well, they also had pig’s ears to keep them occupied.  Tom’s young cat, Pilar, seemed to enjoy having captive canines in her yard; she studied them from every angle as she stalked their play pen. (The pups were oblivious.)  Towards the end of the evening, Tom invited them up on his large porch, were they sat with the guests — under the watchful eye of Pilar, who sat on the porch rail. (The pups finally noticed her! And they were very respectful.)  It was nice to learn how easily the pups can travel and how well they adapted to a new environment.  Although, truth be told, Tom lives only 2 blocks from us.

Uzi’s hidding place

Uzi loves to hang out under the couch — indoors or out.  He’s already grown to the point where getting under the living room couch is a tight fit, but he still has several inches clearance on the patio couch. For now…

Sassa’s hidding place

Bring me a shrubbery!  Sassa likes to chill under the bushes in the garden.  There’s enough room under the lowest branches to allow him to run around; not to mention dirt to roll in, sticks to bite. and foliage for shade.

Vet visit

Sassa, Uzi & Vet

The pups had a meet-and-greet with the Vet last weekend.  Nothing trauma-inducing, just a quick hello and a once over (well, there were 2 pups, so perhaps a twice over).  At 10 weeks, Sassafras is 9 lbs and Ouzo is 10 lbs (although he’s fluffier and looks much bigger). We have doggie-care game plan for strong, healthy pups — just like the Grandpa Sam was.
